Who, Who, Who...is in our backyard?

This week was a wild week for wildlife at our house!  We have a little pond and waterfall in our backyard which attracts all sorts of animals--especially birds.  So the other day Michael noticed a larger-than-normal bird taking a bath at the top of the waterfall.  He called me over to take a look and at first we didn't know what it was.  Then we grabbed the binoculars to discover that it was an owl--but a very unique owl.  It was tiny as far as owls go (only about 6 inches tall), and just plain adorable as it splashed in the water and then air-dried in a nearby tree. As Michael ran for the bird book, I ran for my camera.  Michael learned that it was a Northern Pygmy Owl, and I learned that this owl did not mind posing for a camera...

And here's a litany of the other animals we saw in our yard this week, although most of them I didn't get captured on film (drat):
  • a Piliated Woodpecker
  • 3 Grouse (not sure what kind, but we think they were the "Ruffed Grouse"
  • a wild turkey who visits our yard almost every evening (we named him "Jake")
  • a Mule Deer Doe that the boys were able to hand feed some carrots
  • a 3 point Mule Deer Buck that we were able to watch rub and thrash his antlers on one of our tiny aspen trees until he knocked it down (he looked might proud of himself afterwards) :)

Thank you, Heavenly Father for this home
and all the gifts you lavish upon us daily!
You are so good and worthy to be praised!!!
